PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
I would like to introduce myself as Acting Principal until the end of Term 2. I am very excited and humbled to be in this role. I previously worked at Exeter High School as a teacher and grade leader/acting AST from 2000 to 2006. This was my first Tasmanian teaching appointment after relocating from the United Kingdom as a Maths/Science teacher with my Tasmanian husband. I always look back on it with great memories of being part of a very supportive school community. Since then, I have been AP at Prospect High School and more recently Launceston College. I look forward to bringing what I have learnt from these experiences back to Exeter and serving the community.
During the short time that I have been in this role at Exeter, I am noticing that the school is extremely calm and orderly, and focussed on students having the very best opportunities for learning. I will be working with everyone to ensure that this continues to be the case and look forward to building relationships and understanding the culture of the school.
It is hard to believe that we are already moving into the Easter break, and that the end of Term 1 is just around the corner. I hope that everyone has a restful and rewarding Easter and look forward to a productive and positive end to the term.

Acting Principal

MY EDUCATION DAY
My Education at Exeter High School supports students in making important life choices around planning for their future. It helps them to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities, and aspirations, and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work, and life opportunities. It has been shown that students who consider their interests and opportunities early on have a clearer picture about who they are and what they might like to do. Research has shown that students who are actively engaged in shaping their own life and career have:
- Improved relationships
- Higher aspirations
- An increase in confidence and self esteem
- Healthier lifestyle habits
- A more positive outlook on life.
A variety of activities were undertaken in each year group as part of the EHS My Education Day on Thursday 21st March.
Year 7
The Term 1 Year 7 focus for My Education Day was around teamwork and building relationships. Throughout the day, students explored Exeter High School’s four core values of Respect, Learning, Maturity and Acceptance, working together in small groups to unpack what each value means and what it might look like here at Exeter High School. Each class collaboratively shared their ideas to create a word cloud which is on display in each of their core classrooms. Students also engaged in a series of class vs. class team building challenges which encouraged them to work with a variety of students and continue to get to know and build positive relationships with their peers.
Year 8
The Year 8 focus for My Education Day was around transferrable skills and traits in lesson 1, critical thinking in lesson 2 and teamwork, co-operation, and leadership in lesson 3. These are all skills which are highly valued by employers and students participated in a range of activities to unpack and apply these concepts. They also had an opportunity to self-reflect on their areas of strength and areas for improvement to best set themselves up for positive and productive outcomes in the future. Students engaged very well with the content and activities, making for an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all.
Year 9
On My Education Day, the Year 9 students embarked on an exploration into the world of employment. Many of the year group are currently working in their first jobs or are about to look for work and there was lots of discussion around workplaces and experiences so far.
The first session of the day focussed on potential career pathways based on current interests. To do this, students accessed the My Future website. The purpose of this website is to provide information on certain careers and make recommendations about levels and types of education, hopefully helping students form some long-term goals.
The second session was spent watching the film The Pursuit of Happyness. The Pursuit of Happyness is based on a true story about a family trying to make a success of their lives and the resilience required to stay on track.
The last session of our day involved personal wellbeing activities and teamwork activities. Student opted into these sessions and had a lot of fun!
Our Year 9 students conducted themselves well throughout the day. They were engaged and responded to task requirements and upheld our schools core values.
Year 10
The year 10 program was separated into a variety of sessions:
The establishment of Transition Plans and development of Resumes for Mock Interviews in Term 2.
Students experienced two presenters, before and after recess. Scott Phillip from the CSIRO presented an opportunity to be involved in the GFG Alliance program, working with mentors, experiencing a variety of work opportunities, and developing STEM and communication skills. John Eastwood spoke to students regarding the wide-ranging career opportunities available in Civil Construction.
My Futures website - students completed their career profile quizzes to help clarify ideas and thoughts around possible, future pathways.
Identity and work - these activities highlighted what was important to students and how they can plan their future Career Path.
