PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL
Last Friday 17th May, we held our annual Cross Country Carnival at school. Over the past few weeks, students have been practicing the course and it was great to see participation at all levels on the day. We had some great performances and personal bests. Thank you to Mrs Robinson and Mr Stewart for organising a very successful carnival. We look forward to hearing more about student achievement and participation from them. Thank you also to Mrs Yole and the SLC for organising a fun Colour Run to help students achieve house points, and to Mr Clarke for his interesting commentating.
YEAR 11/12 AGRICULTURE FORESTRY CAMP
Students in Years 11 and 12 recently enjoyed an enriching Agriculture Forestry Camp, organised by Darcy Vickers from the Forestry Education Foundation. The camp kicked off with a tour of the Agricultural Training Centre of Excellence at the Burnie TasTAFE. Highlights included a tour of the Forico Nursery in Somerset and an in-depth look at the Surrey Hills Estate. The experience also featured an overnight stay at Guildford Lodge, giving students a chance to immerse themselves in the forestry environment. They observed harvesting operations, explored a woodchip mill, and visited the Fibretech Lab, gaining valuable insights into the forestry industry and its career pathways. A big thank you to all the staff from Forico for making this experience possible, and to our Year 11/12 teachers Mr Fox, Mr Finnigan and Mrs Yole for organising the camp.

EVERY SCHOOL DAY MATTERS
We know that education has a positive impact on the lives of children and young people, and that every day at school can help them have bright lives and positive futures.
The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) is doing statewide consultation on school attendance. 3P Advisory is independently running the consultation. Your answers are confidential, and you won’t be identified.
This will help us better understand any barriers that may be in the way, and what supports are needed to help with getting to school. You can also share your thoughts about what you like or don’t like about our Every school day matters campaign.
We want to hear from students, their families, our staff, and anyone in the community. You. Take part in an online survey, share or vote for suggestions, or join an online drop-in session via the 3P website. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
CYBER SAFETY SESSIONS
On Wednesday 15th May, we were pleased to have Senior Constable Annabel Shegog visit us and deliver presentations to our 7/8s and 9/10s on cyber safety. This covered things like keeping yourself safe online, avoiding online safety risks, the law around cyber safety and what to do if you feel that you are being harassed online. Students appreciated learning about this, and understanding strategies that everyone can use to stay safe online.
Here are two recommended eSafety resources for further information and support:

RE-DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Over the past few weeks, the re-development continues to build momentum with much of the demolition work completed. At the site meeting last week, we were able to engage teachers in having some input into the layout and facilities for the Art and Cookery areas. Thinking about what it will look like very soon and how we can set up our new classrooms so that learning is optimised keeps us motivated as we manage the disruptions of the building works. Students are coping well with only being able to use the bottom part of the school. However, if your child is feeling that they are not coping with the disruption, please let us know so that we can put some supports in place.
We had to remove our ash trees in the top courtyard last week. We were advised that it was not possible to keep them due to their well-established root system that may have caused safety issues in the future, and concerns that they would probably not survive with the new pavers being less porous. The trees have provided shade to students over many years, and we have enjoyed their seasonal changes. We have taken some cuttings to see if we can grow a tree that can be planted somewhere on the school site to remind us of them, and will ensure that suitable, mature trees with a shallow root system are planted in their place.
LITTER
With everyone now needing to use the bottom part of the school, we are noticing an increase in litter in this area. Please can I remind everyone that we all have a responsibility to put our litter in the provided bins so that our environment shows the pride that we take in it.
BUSES
A reminder that all students are expected to behave appropriately on school buses and have a right to feel safe on their bus journey. We have recently had a meeting with Manion buses to discuss how we can work together to ensure that this is the case for everyone. We have reminded students in grade assemblies that students can get significant bans from bus transport by bus companies if they do not follow the expectations.
CHAPLAINCY WEEK
Thank you to our chaplain Bec Cameron for organising a staff morning tea in recognition of Chaplaincy Week. The school appreciates the work that Bec does to support our students through initiatives such as the Food Club and providing opportunities to support student wellbeing.
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – TUESDAY 11 JUNE, 6.00pm
The Annual General Meeting for the Exeter High School Association will be held on Tuesday 11 June 2024 at 6:00pm in the library. The School Association would certainly value new members and their contributions moving forward.
The School Association is made up of parents, staff, and community members, and is integral to the school, working with the principal, to achieve shared outcomes for learners attending the school and for the benefit of the whole school community. The purpose of the School Association is to provide members with a path to participate within and support the school.
Please contact the office on 6394 4366 for a nomination form as we have vacancies available. Please return the nomination form to the school office no later than 3.00pm on Tuesday 11th June.

EHS CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL 2024
On Friday 17th May, the annual EHS Cross Country Carnival was held in near perfect weather conditions. Congratulations to all those students who participated in good spirit to earn valuable house points and enjoy an afternoon of activity and fun. Also, thank you to the parents and family members who came along to support.
This year saw some strong podium finishes, which bodes well for the inter-high carnival to be held at Kings Meadows High School on Friday 24th May. Although attendance rates were down, those who made the effort to participate thoroughly enjoyed themselves and contributed to the day’s positive vibe.
With the introduction of a new course for the Year 9 and 10 boys last year, there was a definite opportunity for these records to be challenged this year. Congratulations to Jack P who smashed the 2023 record for the Year 10 Boys course by 53 seconds in an impressive time of 16.43 mins. Special mention to Oscar who came in second place, also breaking the previous record.
The introduction of a Colour Run event by the Student Leadership Council to promote school culture and fun was a great way to round out the afternoon. The participation points from this event were significant in changing the final points for the day.
Cross Country champions and runners-up will be recognised at our end of term whole school assembly.

EXETER GOLF CLUB DONATION TO EXETER HIGH SCHOOL:
Exeter High School is thrilled to receive a generous donation from the Exeter Golf Club. The Tuesday Ladies Golf group fundraise annually to donate to a selected group or charity. Funds to the value of $750 raised from raffles at the golf club were kindly donated to Exeter High School to use through the Breakfast Club or other areas of need for students.
We are extremely grateful to the Exeter Golf Club who also support the school by sponsoring two junior golf memberships each year which are presented to graduating Year 10 students who show an interest in the sport through HPE lessons.
We look forward to continuing this wonderful community partnership and would like to thank the Exeter Golf Club for their ongoing support and generous donation.
TREVALLYN POWER STATION VISIT
On Monday 20th May, thirteen Year 10 students visited the Trevallyn Power Station as part of Beacon Foundation’s Growth Industry Preparation Program. Students from Launceston College’s engineering program also attended. Following a safety briefing and welcome, the students introduced themselves before Sue Street, Hydro Tasmania Education Officer, presented a brief history of Hydro Tasmania and explained the workings of a hydroelectric power station. While Sue was speaking, one of the turbines was switched on, making the station rumble. A site tour followed. Wearing protective eyewear, ear plugs, hard-hats and high-visibility vests, students were escorted through each level of the power station, where they could see and appreciate the scale and complexity of each of the four turbines and associated equipment. The lower floors of the power station are below sea level. Following morning tea, students spoke to several Hydro Tasmania employees during a ‘speed careering’ session, learning about a variety of roles and opportunities available in Hydro Tasmania. Sue then discussed pathways into Hydro Tasmania, including minimum educational requirements. After lunch, students examined a job advertisement for an entry-level position at Hydro Tasmania, determining how they might respond to each section of the advertisement. The day concluded with a quiz, with Noah from 10B answering lots of questions correctly and receiving the most prizes (lollies). The day was informative, interesting, and enjoyable, and we thank Kathy Fisher from Beacon Foundation for coordinating this opportunity for us.
