PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Re-development
Last week we welcomed Education Minister Jo Palmer to find out more about our re-development. Minister Palmer’s visit was attended by Tasmanian media, giving our school some great publicity.
Minister Palmer was very impressed with the works completed so far and interested in seeing the plans and discussing the timeline. She commented "We absolutely know that when you have enhanced facilities such as this, it's a much better teaching experience for our teachers, but also a wonderful learning experience for our students."
Tas City Building construction manager John Stagg attended the visit and explained the importance of staging construction to minimise disruption to student learning. He also talked about replacing the present courtyards with some nice, exposed aggregate type concrete, some nice seating arrangements and structures that will enhance outdoor learning opportunities. We thank Minister Palmer for visiting us and look forward to updating her as the re-development progresses.
Every School Day Matters
In recent newsletters I have highlighted the importance of regular attendance to student learning and connection to school. We are currently in the process of sending out attendance letters for students with more than 5 days absence. We encourage parents and carers to talk to us so that we can work together to support the attendance of all students. If you receive a letter, please follow up with a call to the school or make a time to come in for a meeting with a teacher or myself.
Science and Engineering Challenge
Recently, we were represented by some of our 9/10 students at the Science and Engineering Challenge. Students were involved in an exhilarating day competing against other schools in fun and engaging hands-on Science and Engineering activities. Overall, we achieved 4th place which is a great result for our school.
Thanks to Miss Hall for organising this great experience for students.
Polish Program
I was privileged last week to watch a group of Grade 10 students successfully participating in the Beacon Foundation Polish program. Polish is a powerful and practical program that helps students feel more confident about their transition into the world of work. They learnt about the importance of transferable skills, met with mentors from different industries and participated in mock interviews. Students gave some really positive feedback about their experience.
Thanks to Mrs Parish and the Grade 10 team for organising, and to Beacon and the volunteers who gave their knowledge, skills and time to support our students.
School Social
Our school social “Pizza Party” was held last night. It was great to see so many students participating and once again, the behaviour and participation of our students was outstanding – as we have come to expect at these events. The pizza went down very well with students and staff! Thank you to parents and carers for supporting students to attend this event, and to staff who supervised – without this support, these socials cannot go ahead. Thanks to Mrs Yole and the SLC for organising the evening.
Mid-year Reports
A reminder to families that mid-year reports will be distributed in week 8. The report will show your child’s learning achievement against the 9-point visual scale, showing specifically where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level.
There will be no teacher comments on the report. This term, parent/teacher conferences will be offered in Week 9 on the Monday and Tuesday nights from 3.30 – 6.00 pm. These are a great opportunity to discuss how your child is progressing with their learning. Booking information will be sent out in the coming weeks via Facebook and in the actual report envelopes.
More information on reporting is available here:
Year 11/12 College Visits
This week our Grade 10 students were visited by representatives from Launceston College and Newstead College, sharing information about each of the colleges and courses offered. It is an exciting time for our Grade 10s as they think about the opportunities beyond Exeter High School or remaining here for Year 11/12. I encourage students to ask teachers if they have any questions. My recent background is senior secondary, and I am also very happy to talk to students and parents/carers about transition to Year 11/12.
Thank you to Newstead College and Launceston College for visiting our school and sharing opportunities available with students.
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – NEXT TUESDAY 11 JUNE, 6.00pm
The Annual General Meeting for the Exeter High School Association will be held this coming Tuesday 11 June 2024 at 6:00pm in the library. The School Association would certainly value new members and their contributions moving forward.
The School Association is made up of parents, staff, and community members, and is integral to the school, working with the principal, to achieve shared outcomes for learners attending the school and for the benefit of the whole school community. The purpose of the School Association is to provide members with a path to participate within and support the school.
Please contact the office on 6394 4366 for a nomination form as we have vacancies available. Please return the nomination form to the school office no later than 3.00pm on Tuesday 11th June.

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE
On Thursday, 23rd May 2024, twenty-two Year 9/10 students travelled to the UTAS Inveresk Campus to compete in the 2024 Science and Engineering Challenge. The day consisted of eight challenges, each focusing on a different engineering discipline including Electrical, Mechanical and Indigenous Engineering. Students were split into groups to complete one or two of these challenges. The day required our students to implement a range of fundamental engineering skills; problem solving, communication, and teamwork.
Exeter High School placed a respectable fourth out of eight schools from the north of the state. Our students returned feeling inspired and motivated to improve on this result next year.
DRAMA PREPARATIONS
Students busy painting the set for 'The Wicked Prince' in readiness to perform to Exeter Primary School students in weeks 8 and 9 this term.
7C SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
7C Students enjoyed making ice-cream “in a bag” during their recent Chemistry unit.
NEWSTEAD AND LAUNCESTON COLLEGE PRESENTATIONS
Year 10 students were lucky enough to be visited by Launceston and Newstead College. Both presentations delivered valuable information on the courses, subjects and programs offered at their schools. On Monday 3rd June, we sat through Launceston College’s compelling slideshow presentation and were delivered beneficial information about the campus and its amenities, as well as the vast array of classes on offer. The following day, on Tuesday 4th, we were visited again, this time by Newstead College. On this visit, four prior Exeter High students were in attendance. They helped to answer questions and gave a student perspective of their experiences at the college. After the presentations, and certainly after the college open days coming up, students are sure to have a better understanding of the colleges, how they run, and all the incredible opportunities available.
