PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Mid-year Reports and Parent/Teacher Conferences
Mid-year reports have now been distributed. The report shows your child’s learning achievement against the 9-point visual scale, showing specifically where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level. Thank you to teachers for providing work samples, which show how your child is progressing.
A reminder that parent/teacher conferences will be offered in Week 9 on the Monday and Tuesday nights from 3.30 – 6.00 pm. These are a great opportunity to discuss how your child is progressing with their learning. Booking information was included in the report envelopes.
My Education Day
All our students participated in our My Education Day on Thursday last week and this provided them with more opportunities to prepare themselves for life after high school. While the focus was different for each of the grades, the purpose of the day was to ensure that all students are reflecting on their own strengths and interests, and to give them time to explore possibilities for the future.
College Open Days
Year 10 students participated in College Open Days at Newstead College and Launceston College this week. This gave students the opportunity to find out more about the courses that the colleges offer, as well as getting a feel for what it is like to be a student there. Thank you to our Year 10 team for coordinating this. Our Year 10 teachers are well equipped to follow up with students regarding any questions that they may have. It is an exciting time for students as they think more deeply about Year 11/12 options, including the Year 11/12 program that we offer here at Exeter High School.
West Tamar Civic Reception
On Monday afternoon, I accompanied SLC members Samantha and Katelyn to meet Her Excellency, the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania, and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO at a West Tamar Council Civic Reception at the Windsor Community Precinct. This was a great opportunity to hear about environmental and community initiatives in the West Tamar. Sam and Katelyn represented our school admirably. Sam was also there in her capacity representing the West Tamar Council.
Every School Day Matters
Our attendance rate is currently 78%. We want to work closely with families to support student attendance. You may have received a request with your child’s recent report to complete and return a slip to explain absences. We strongly encourage you to do so in order for us to better understand the reasons why students do not attend school. Parent/teacher appointments are also a great time to discuss your child’s attendance with teachers so that we can work together to maximise learning opportunities.
School Association
I am pleased to report that our School Association Annual General Meeting was a success, and our 2024 Association has been formed. Thank you to Nicole Jones for organising this meeting. Nicole has included a report in this newsletter.
Re-development Update
Phase 1 of our re-development is well on track and our new Cooking and Art spaces will be ready early next term. It is exciting to see the spaces taking shape, with painting and window installation taking place, and discussions underway about the layout of the furniture and shelving in these spaces.

MY EDUCATION DAY
My Education at Exeter High School supports students in making important life choices around planning for their future. It helps them to identify their personal interests, values, strengths, opportunities, and aspirations, and teaches them how to use this knowledge to make decisions about their future learning, work, and life opportunities. It has been shown that students who consider their interests and opportunities early on have a clearer picture about who they are and what they might like to do.
A variety of activities were undertaken in each year group as part of the EHS My Education Day on Thursday 13th June.
Year 7
The Term 2 Year 7 focus for My Education Day was teamwork, opportunities, and transferrable skills. During lesson 1, we explored the pros and cons of the recently announced Tasmanian AFL team and the impact the stadium will have on the state and the potential areas of employment in Tasmania in 2028 as a result. Students participated in a series of games during lesson 2, which encouraged them to work with a variety of students and continue to get to know and build positive relationships with each other. To conclude the day, we viewed a film with the theme of ‘friendship’. We would like to commend the Year 7’s on their engagement in the activities throughout the day.
Year 8
The Grade 8 focus for My Education Day was around growth mindset and the power of thinking positively about situations. In Session 1, students re-visited the zones of regulation and explored their personal window of tolerance. In Session 2, the topic of growth mindset and strategies to turn around negative thoughts were explored. They also had an opportunity to self-reflect on their areas of strength and areas for improvement to best set themselves up for positive and productive outcomes in the future. Session 3 was an opportunity for activity-based class v. class competitions emphasising teamwork and co-operation for successful outcomes. Students engaged very well with the content and activities, making for an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for all.
Year 9
For My Education Day Term 2, Year 9 had a focus on resume writing. The first half of the day involved students completing a proforma which is designed to identify and outline their employability skills and attributes. This document will be used on future My Education days when resumes are being created.
In the afternoon, students watched the film Hidden Figures. Hidden Figures is a 2016 American biographical film. It is based on the book of the same name about three female African American mathematicians: Katherine Goble Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. All three worked at NASA during the Space Race.
This film linked to some of the topics explored in our Making a Nation unit in HASS.
Year 10
The Year 10 students focussed on the transition from Year 10 into Year 11/12, resumes, preparing for and practising questions for our Mock Interviews, and our Transition Plans. We used the MyFutures website to explore career options based on our skills and interests, studied other websites including TASC, yourcareer.gov.au, mycareers, careerify and seek. We enjoyed informative presentations from Ira Sulzberger from the University of Tasmania, and Mr Fox from Exeter High’s Agricultural department – Year 11/12 program. We also explored options for apprenticeships/traineeships, university pathways, and work experience for the remainder of the year. It was a very beneficial day for us as Year 10 students to consider our future and what pathway we may choose to undertake.
