PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Term 3 is racing away with lots of opportunities for our students.
Recently, our Year 9 students were able to meet some Young Tassie Scientists, who talked to them about their careers in science. There was a chemist who studies the chemistry of smells, a conservationist who specialises in ecology, and a mathematician who works with graphs and data. All the presenters talked about what they do on a daily basis and why they chose the field they work in. Hopefully this experience encouraged some of our budding young scientists at Exeter to consider a science pathway.
Our Year 11/12 Agriculture students recently had an incredible visit to the TasTAFE Agricultural Centre of Excellence in Burnie, where they got hands-on experience with the latest agricultural technology. They are among the first in the state to use the specialised calf birthing simulator and farm machinery simulators. What a wonderful authentic learning experience for our students!
Mr Lendvay’s Introduction to Automotive Studies class participated in the Students on Track event at the Supercars. They learnt about race team operation safety protocols and had a great experience trackside.
Year 10 students have participated in education provided by the Pelvic Pain Foundation on Periods, Pain and Endometriosis. Students were very respectful and interested in this learning.
Bullying No Way
Exeter High School is participating in the Bullying No Way: National week of action – 12 to 16 August 2024.
By working collaboratively within our community, we can collectively help reduce bullying.
Parents and carers play an important role in helping their children understand bullying and know how to respond to it.
If your child tells you about things at school, or you observe something in public that involves conflict or bullying, take the opportunity to talk about what bullying is. You can learn more about what defines bullying at bullyingnoway.gov.au.
Questions you could ask:
- What do you think bullying is?
- Have you seen it? How did you feel?
- Have you ever felt scared at school because of bullying?
- As well as me, who are the other adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?
- Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?
- Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?
Remind your child that bullying is never okay and discuss how they can respond safely if they experience or witness it.
Encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult and keep seeking support if needed.
By promoting open communication, we empower children to stand up against bullying and create a safer environment where everyone can feel that they belong.
For more information, visit bullyingnoway.gov.au.
Every School Day Matters
We have been pleased to see some improvement in attendance this term in comparison with the last few weeks of last term. Thank you to families for prioritising school attendance. We know that attending school helps students to spend time with their friends and teachers, create new and fun experiences, find their interests, learn new things and open up their options – for whatever future they want (whether that’s their dream job or to travel around the world).
A respectful reminder that all absences need to be explained and this can be done easily by replying to the school attendance text message.
Re-development Update
We are very excited that in the next week or two we will be handed over from Tas City Building our brand-new Cooking and Visual Art facilities. Students have been very patient this term doing theory for cooking subjects, and they will be looking forward to experiencing practical cooking in a new, contemporary kitchen environment. Our Visual Art students have been able to continue with their practical Art learning in another area of the school, but I am sure they will be inspired by the beautiful aesthetic of the new Art area to produce some great work which we can display on our new pin boards.
We look forward to providing opportunities for sharing the completed spaces with our school community later this year, and once again thank everyone for the positive and adaptive way that they have managed teaching and learning while works are ongoing.
