PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

I have highlighted the importance of Respect in previous newsletters, but I again wish to remind the community of its importance. Respectful behaviour is vital for maintaining healthy relationships and creating a positive environment. We want all members of the Exeter High School community to be considerate, kind and show empathy towards others in all interactions. Respect is behaviour that should be practiced by everyone, regardless of age, gender, or culture. When people feel respected, they are more likely to communicate openly, share their thoughts, and work with others to achieve common goals. As an EHS community, we want to create a respectful and inclusive environment. Any form of disrespect will not be tolerated. This includes the use of offensive or derogatory language, or any kind of racism. For more information on the Department for Education Children and Young People's policy on Respectful Schools, visit the following link:
We are nearly at the end of Term 2 and our school continues to hum along with students engaged and teachers delivering high-quality, engaging tasks that set students up to be successful learners and valued contributors to our school and wider community. I am impressed, as I walk around the school each day, with how our students have adapted to our focus on orderly learning environments. Classes are very settled, allowing for both students and teachers to maximise the learning outcomes in all lessons. We take pride in offering our students many opportunities throughout the school year, whether it be competitions, presentations, inter-high carnivals or extra-curricular activities. One such extra-curricular activity that the school has supported is a group of Year 9/10 students who have been traveling to support our feeder primary schools conduct sporting carnivals. I have received excellent feedback from parents and staff from this school on how well our students represented EHS and the mature way in which they worked with the primary school students.
Research has proven that when students attend school all day and every day, they achieve much better results and give themselves a greater chance of a successful future. School helps student build social and emotional skills such as teamwork, communication and resilience, along with developing their academic understanding. Parents need to be aware, as well, that it is a legal requirement that students attend school. Under the law, you must make sure that your child attends school every day unless you have a reasonable excuse. It is very important that you don’t keep your child away from school for minor reasons. You can expect Exeter High School to do the following:
- Monitor student attendance.
- The office will communicate every time your child is absent from school.
- We will follow up on any unexplained absences.
- Provide students with real life authentic experiences to engage them in their learning.
- Work with you around strategies to encourage your child to come to school.
It is important that if your child is absent from school, you contact the office and provide a reason. If you have any problems with getting your child or children to school, please contact us for advice or support.

RE-DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
Bottom courtyard is currently being paved, and greenery has been planted.

UPDATE ON OUR FARM

Great happenings on the farm. As part of our mandate to introduce new technology to the students, two drones were set up for use on the farm and for demonstrations at other schools.
The DJI Mavic 3 Multispectral and the DJI Agras T25 are both purpose-made, autonomous agricultural drones used in the assessment of crop health and subsequent treatment of the crop. The Mavic can map a crop using different wavelengths of light to highlight any growth problems or weeds. It can even count individual plants.

The T25 is a multipurpose sprayer, seeder or fertilizer spreader. In the first photo, you can see Tom Pollitt from Taz Drone Solutions giving Mr Fox from Hagley Farm School (previous Exeter High School Ag teacher) instructions on how to fly the T25. The second photo is Mr Fox showing Cameron, Jessica, Adyson and Kasey how the drone is operated from the controller.
We also acquired eight new, very handsome looking Speckled Park steers after selling the Angus heifers last week.

ALL SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to four of our talented athletic students – Charlie (Year 8), Bria (Year 8), Asha (Year 10) and Buddy (Year 10) who competed at the Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country at Symmons Plains last week. Well done everyone and thank you for representing Exeter High School at this event.
NEW SWING EQUIPMENT

The swings have landed, and the Year 8 students wasted no time soaring into action. Official swing testers on duty and they are a hit.
HANDS ON LEARNING (HoL) – FOCUS PLANS

While everyone in Hands on Learning is looking busy, there is even more going on beneath the surface.
Each student has an individual Focus Plan that they are working on while they go about the day’s tasks. This is like a personal goal and looks different for different people. Some examples include:
- Sharing ideas
- Working with new people
- Helping others
- Using positive language
- Taking initiative
Several times across the day, we meet as a group to check in on how we’re all tracking against our focus plans. We try to find specific examples of when we’ve succeeded. It can be more challenging to name up our successes than you might think! Often, other students in HoL will be able to help out and contribute specific examples of when someone has done a great job on being helpful, working with new people or using kind language.
This is one of the less visible parts of the HoL program and something we wanted to share in recognition of ALL the hard work our students are doing. It’s fantastic to see students in HoL making genuine progress against meaningful personal goals – pushing themselves and helping their peers to develop valuable skills in working as part of a team, forging new connections and building confidence.
YEAR 7 SCIENCE
Our Year 7 students have continued exploring the fascinating world of chemistry, this time diving into mixtures and solutions!
They’ve been busy conducting hands-on experiments to investigate whether substances are soluble or insoluble, and have even used chromatography to explore how substances can be separated based on their properties. One of the highlights was using different separation techniques - including filtration and evaporation to successfully retrieve salt from a mixture of rocks, sand and salt.
Great curiosity, careful observations, and lots of scientific thinking on display! Check out the photos below to see their investigations in action.
Science is awesome

FORENSIC SCIENCE
Entombed Escape Rooms: Forensic Science class visited the Entombed Escape Rooms on Wednesday 4th June to test their investigative skills. Each group was given an hour to find clues to escape. It was a challenge and everyone who attended successfully escaped.

Launceston Police Station:
On Wednesday 11th June Forensic Science students visited the Launceston Police Station. While they were there, a forensic officer spoke to them about the responsibilities of the job, and what requirements they need if they wish to pursue a career in this area. He showed them some pieces of evidence that were from actual crime scenes that have been solved. He took some fingerprints and showed students the kit they need to put on before entering a crime scene, while explaining the process of investigating.

On completion, students were given a tour of the station. They were taken to processing and it was explained to them what happens when people come in after being arrested. They saw the interview rooms and got a brief rundown of police body cameras and how they are used. A very interesting and informative excursion.

STUDENT WORK PLACEMENTS

Our Work Placement program continues to offer exciting and diverse opportunities for students to gain real-world experience across a range of industries. We recently featured students on placement with Tas City Building, and today we’re excited to share another great example.
River has commenced a work placement with Flinders Island Aviation and has been busy delivering mail, freight and passengers to the island each Friday. This is another example of the wonderful authentic experiences our students are participating in through our Workplace program.

Any students who are interested in a work placement are encouraged to speak to Mr Stevenson or Mrs Saville.
Keep an eye out for our next report as we continue to highlight the fantastic experiences our students are having across various industries.
